Wizards Way

May, 2017

Synopsis

A project I completed while pursuing my education and what I submitted for my final project for my Advanced Game Engine Scripting course at Columbia College Chicago. A 2D platformer where the player controls a wizard, capable of using his magic to shift between the normal and "dark" realities.

This was a solo project where I very largely focused on level design that was interesting and fun, along with having interesting and unique UI for menus, trying my hardest to teach the player how to play, include appropriate sound effects and animations.

Postmortem

This projects development went very smoothly. I had nailed the warping mechanic almost instantly and the few bugs that came from it, almost seemed like they resolved themselves after some further testing. Saying that, it's by no means a perfect mechanic but it works just as I intended. Since I had hammered down my main mechanic so early I was able to focus on making the game show well, make sure all my animations worked at the appropriate moments. I was able to do some experimenting with the UI and using sprite animations in Unity's UI system and I think it shows very well. Above all else I wanted to focus the most on level design, with this warping mechanic being the center piece for the game, each level had two versions that had some minor changes between them. But these seemingly minor changes were integral to how the level would flow and I was very proud of myself after finishing each level, especially the third and final one. All in all this was most fun project I have worked on and in my opinion the one that shows the best.
